Most outdoor pools close up after Labor Day, but one Ohio recreation center decided to invite local pups in for an open dog swim before closing their doors for the season. This annual event saw dogs donning life vests to frolic and play in the water, which will be drained upon the conclusion of this adorable swim session.
The beauty of the annual dog swim, which is hosted by the Rocky River Recreation Center in Rocky River, Ohio, is that human swimmers aren’t allowed. This gives dogs free reign of the pool and plenty of room to doggie paddle, play fetch, and — judging from the video of this event, which you can watch below — make lots of new canine friends.
Even so, some pups were hesitant to dip their paws in the water without their owners, which is why humans were allowed to wade into the shallow end, provided they wore face masks and followed social distancing guidelines. But even these pups generally dropped their inhibitions once they got into the water. Other dogs couldn’t hide their glee as they joyfully swam around the pool.
“Last year we really had a lot fun here, this year he’s just enjoying swimming around,” dog owner Ester Schrager said of her 13-year-old German Shepherd, Gari, according to Cleveland.com. All dogs deserve a fun day at the pool, but Gari, who spent 12 years working as Schrager’s service dog, has truly earned this fun day off!

The dog swim session was provided free of charge, although pet owners were asked to provide a $2 donation at the door. The money will be used to support Love-A-Stray, an Ohio animal rescue run entirely by volunteers, and the Rocky River K9 Unit.
