A Family Didn’t Want Their Dogs Anymore, So They Sold Them To A Meat Farm.
Giving up your pets, unless it’s a special circumstance, is bad enough as it is; but selling them into the meat market is as cruel as it gets.
Two dogs from South Korea, named Lilly and Pinch, were betrayed by their family, who suddenly didn’t want them anymore.
Instead of bringing them to a shelter or putting them up for adoption, they decided to sell them to a local meat farm, where they’d live under the most horrifying conditions.
“Every day is suffering on these farms because of the daily neglect they take,” Kelly O’Meara, director of companion animals and engagement at the Humane Society International (HSI), told The Dodo. “They’re exposed to all the elements in barren metal cages. They get just enough food to get by. It’s a pretty brutal environment.”
Luckily, the dogs horrible stay at the farm did not last long. Although the meat trade is unfortunately legal in South Korea, this particular farm was on land that the operator didn’t legally own, so authorities were able to free all 35 of the dogs, including Lilly and Pinch.
Lilly and Pinch, along with 29 of the dogs, flew to America and ended up at a shelter in North Carolina. The dogs were bathed and will now get proper medical care and, most importantly, love.
Despite what Lilly and Pinch have gone through, they are still the sweetest dogs. They’re very well-socialized and whomever ends up adopting them will be incredibly lucky to have them!
So far, the Humane Society International has shut down five farms in South Korea, rescuing nearly 525 dogs. Sadly, that is still just a tiny portion of the 2.5 to 3 million dogs that are slaughtered each year in South Korea.
