Dogs Are Being Hit Hard With Flu Season This Year

As humans, we are all too familiar with disease. We’ve been dealing with colds and flu for many years, and recently, we had to go through the COVID-19 pandemic.

As it turns out, however, it isn’t just humans who struggle with illness. Our furry friends also have to go through these difficulties, and they can get very sick as a result.

One of the strains that has been particularly menacing for dogs this season is the H3N2. Don’t worry. This particular influenza does not affect humans but it can sure make your little dog feel sick, according to the CDC.

The CDC reports that some of the symptoms associated with H3N2 include fever, coughing, and loss of appetite. Some dogs can even end up with pneumonia in a worst-case scenario.

According to the New York Times, experts think that dogs are suffering from this outbreak because they are co-mingling again. During the pandemic, they stayed home with their humans and didn’t really get out with other animals.

These days, we put our dogs in kennels when we travel or we take them to the office with us. Many dogs end up in the shelter after they are no longer needed now that the coronavirus pandemic is over.

Even if a dog stays at home, they are not immune to the problem. A trip to get groomed or a simple trip to the dog park can end up getting them infected.

The American Kennel Club says that it is possible for the infection to be transmitted when they are near another animal that is infected. It can also be transmitted through crates, water bowls, and shared food.

If a dog is exposed, they are likely to become infected and get sick. Eight out of 10 dogs will have symptoms, and it can take up to three weeks for them to start feeling better.

At this time, it is not possible for your dog to transmit the H3N2 to humans. In other words, get them the help that they need and then give them all the love they deserve.
