A Diver Was Swimming In Hawaii When A Dolphin Swam Up To Him, Asking For Urgent Help

Divers were swimming with manta rays in Hawaii when all of a sudden a dolphin swam up to one of them. She got extremely close to one of the divers as if she was asking for help. Then they quickly realized that that’s exactly what she was doing!

The divers discovered a fishing line and hook stuck in her flipper that hindered her from swimming with ease and probably caused her a lot of pain. He gently removed the hook, but his job wasn’t done. The fishing line was still tangled around her flipper.

Thankfully, the diver had scissors with him and was able to cut the dolphin free. He then waved goodbye as she swam away to freedom.

It’s amazing how smart these creatures are. She swam all the way to this diver to ask for help and was so cooperative while he was untangling her. She even glanced back at him before she swam away as if she was saying ‘thank you.’

The footage was provided by Keller Laros, a professional scuba instructor and manta ray expert. As an avid underwater cameraman, he uses his footage for manta research.

Laros is also co-founder and President of the Manta Pacific Research Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to “research, education, and conservation concerning manta rays and the marine environment.”

This important work has given Laros the chance to free several mantas and sea turtles from fishing lines throughout his career (and explains why he had scissors). But this was the first time the diver/instructor had been approached by a dolphin in need of help.

Fortunately, this moving encounter was captured on film, where it’s since been viewed millions of times. “This was truly an amazing experience,” Laros wrote on his website. Talk about being in the right place at the right time!
