BREAKING NEWS: Darwin’s Natural Pet Products, of Tukwila, Wash., has announced a voluntary recall of lots of its Darwin’s Natural Selections dog food due to possible salmonella contamination.
Salmonella infection can have serious and debilitating consequences for both people and animals, particularly young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems, Dog Food Advisor reports.
Humans are especially at risk if they handle the contaminated products and forget to wash their hands.
Infected individuals may experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. And animals may suffer even worse, with bloody stools, lethargy, and possibly even death.
Why was it recalled?
This product is being voluntarily recalled as a precautionary measure due to elevated levels of salmonella.
According to Darwin’s president, Gary Tashjian, the company has not received any reports of humans or pets developing infection or other health issues from the food and is conducting the recall out of “an abundance of caution.”
What can you do?
If your dog shows signs of discomfort or illness, please contact your veterinarian.
If you have this product in your possession, discontinue use immediately and return the food for a full refund. You can also email Darwin’s at email@example.com, call 866-832-8319, or contact your nearest FDA consumer complaint coordinator with any questions.
