Silver Paws: 8 Ways You Can Best Support Your Senior Pet

6. Pay Attention To Changing Dietary Needs

Nutrition is always important, but it becomes even more critical as your dog or cat ages. Choose healthy, high-quality foods made from whole ingredients. Senior formulas are often supplemented with additional nutrients that aging animals need, so they’re a good choice. In addition, consider switching to a softer diet. Many senior pets experience dental problems, which can sometimes go unnoticed for awhile, even with regular checkups. Wet foods can be an ideal option. If your pet does well on a particular kibble, consider wetting it with water or low-sodium broth to make it more palatable.

5. Add Joint-Support Supplements

Pretty much every senior pet develops some degree of arthritis, but there’s a lot you can do to help stave that off. More severe cases may require prescription medications from your veterinarian, but joint supplements can go a long way toward easing minor twinges and stiffness. They may even help slow the process. Commercial joint supplements, such as Cosequin, are a safe bet and typically come in easy-to-feed chewable tablets. Common formulas that are known to support joint health include glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM. You can also try herbs, such as turmeric, which reduces inflammation and can ease the symptoms of arthritis. Be sure to consult with your vet before adding any supplements to your pet’s diet, though, particularly if your pet has chronic health problems or is taking medication.
