Cool Treat for a Dog: Pumpkin Ice Cream! The Animal Rescue Site
You’re not the only one who loves a frosty dish of flavorful ice cream in summertime (or anytime, really). Your dog wants some, too. Make this cool pumpkin ice cream for Fido, and perhaps he’ll let you have a taste for yourself. Pumpkin “ice cream” for dogs is an easy-to-make treat. All you need is a blender, paper cups, and a few yummy ingredients. It’s also healthy for your canine friend. As the University of Illinois notes, pumpkin is low in fat and super high in nutritional value. Here’s a couple recipes to keep your dog cool and happy.
This simple recipe from Pet360, begins with two cups of unflavored, unsweetened organic yogurt poured into a blender. Drop in a couple of ripe bananas, one cup of smooth peanut butter and one-half cup of canned pumpkin puree. Put the top on tightly, and whizz on medium speed until everything’s nicely blended together.
Scoop into paper cups and freeze for three hours or until firm. Because this recipe contains no sugars or added fats, it’s super healthy and much better for your pet than store bought ice cream treats.
Modern Dog magazine offers a more savory take on pumpkin ice cream for pooches. For this one, you’ll need a saucepan and a stove.
Begin by simmering two chicken livers in one cup of water. When cooked all the way through, remove livers from pan and drain on a paper towel until cool to the touch. If you like, you can reserve the broth to pour over dry dog food later. Put the cooked livers in a mixing bowl and smash together with one cup of plain unsweetened yogurt and one cup of solid-pack pumpkin puree. When smooth, scoop into ice cube trays and freeze until firm. Both of these tasty treats can be a bit messy when they melt, so it’s a good idea to feed them to Fido outdoors.
