Impress Your Feline Friends With A Crafty Catio

Create the Roof

Attach the roof, and make it waterproof and most definitely sturdy. Corrugated pieces of clear plexiglass let your cats see through the roof. Wooden planks shore up the roof, and you might consider making a roof with the same material that matches your own house.

Weatherproof What You Can

Weatherproof your catio as much as possible. When it comes to the roof, plug any holes. For the screen, add extra nails or heavy-duty staples to the parts of the screen that are against the wooden planks that form the structure. Along the foundation, seal any gaps between the wooden frame and the concrete so no critters get in and your cats don’t escape to the great outdoors.

Add Features for Cats

It’s not a catio unless your cat enjoys it. That means place some cat toys, a spare liter box, some water and multiple levels for your cats to climb. Putting food out there isn’t a good idea because that might attract animals that have a good sense of smell, such as raccoons or dogs. Make this space as cat-friendly as possible!

Bring on the Cats!

Let your cats out of the house whenever they please with your new catio! Watch them sniff around and explore their own outdoor space from the safety of their own place. A little extra exercise keeps your cat healthy, active and happy.

Indoor cats love to explore things, and a catio gives them a chance to get outside and see the world around them while remaining safe. Just watch what happens when your kitty hears a bird, sees a squirrel or chases after an insect and you recognize precisely why a catio is a good idea. If you’re not a hands-on, DIY type, you can always buy a catio from a retailer and have someone else install it.
