When Emily and Dylan began searching for their dream farmhouse, they were hoping to find something with a country feel and within their budget.
Eventually, they came across the perfect property. There was just one problem: The property was riddled with feral cats.
16 cats, to be exact, called the land around the farmhouse home and the previous owner fed them and got them used to hanging around.
In an interview with The Dodo, Emily explained, “The realtor said they don’t really think they can catch the cats.” The realtor asked Emily if it would be a dealbreaker and she said, “No.”
They ended up purchasing the farmhouse, 16 cats and all! It was a bigger responsibility than they bargained for, but it all ended up being worth it in the end.
Emily and Dylan ended up being great cat parents. They slowly built up trust with the feral felines and got them all fixed and vaccinated. But their kindness didn’t stop there.
Winters are cold and harsh and the couple wanted the cats to have a dedicated shelter to call their own. They wanted the cats to have a space they could run to if they needed to escape the elements or hide from predators.
Thus began the creation of an entire “cat room” that was dedicated just to the feral kitties of the farmhouse! The room was complete with plenty of cat beds, scratch pads, a heater, and endless amounts of food.
Emily said of the cats, “When we first moved in, we were definitely overwhelmed by them. Now we look at them as part of our family. I can’t even imagine going outside and not seeing all my cats there anymore.”
