She didn’t realize how drastically the situation would change.

“Little did I know that in not much time at all the 4 dogs I took in to rescue would turn into 10,” Berhow said. “That’s right…two of the little females were pregnant!”

Each of the puppies and one of the mothers were sent to foster homes, while mama Monet wound up in Berhow’s home.

“After a few weeks, she gave birth, with only a little help from me, to 4 beautiful puppies,” Berhow said. “She was the best mama I have ever seen. I am so thankful she was somewhere warm and safe to have those babies. Two boys and two girls. Now, that’s a lot of tiny mouths to feed (and a lot of poop to pick up).”

Pebbles and her two sisters were found crying in a dumpster when they were only a few weeks old, according to Kelly Dalton of Bombshell Bullies Pit Bull Rescue. All three puppies were deaf.

Eventually, Pebbles was adopted by a couple that rescue staff hoped would love her forever. Sadly, her dream of a forever home was shattered a few years later when her owners decided to return her after having a baby.

Pebbles came back to Bombshell Bullies extremely stressed and very sad, Dalton said. But the shelter wasn’t about to give up on her.

“Since Pebbles came back to us, we have worked on her training, re-socializing her and enriching her life as much as we can until she finds another family to love her,” Dalton said. “She is currently in boarding with our other rescue dogs that benefit from the food bank every day!

1. Twinkie

Walking down a country road in Hartville, MO, an elderly lady saw a sight that broke her heart: three tiny shivering babies lay helpless in a ditch.

From the moment she saw them, she knew they were in trouble and needed help quickly. The kittens eventually made their way to Sherri Hall, of Critter Cradle Animal Sanctuary and Sherri’s Kitty Rehab.

“Three of the most pitiful babies were seen by our veterinarian, who didn’t think they had much of a chance, but I had to try,” Hall said. “Oral antibiotics and two different kinds of eye medicines, KMR, and canned kitten food were necessary to get them on the road to recovery.”

The kittens wouldn’t take a bottle, so Hall had to feed them by syringe. Sadly, two of the kittens died along the way, but Twinkie was able to regain some strength.

“For the first 5 weeks of her rehab, I was convinced she would be blind, but this was a challenge that she fought and won,” Hall said. “Twinkie is an amazing survivor who, by looking at her now, you would have never known was within days of dying without help.”

This loving, playful kitten has completely recovered, thanks to some compassionate caregivers, and now waits for her forever family at Eden Animal Haven.
