The animal hoarding situation in Lancaster, Kentucky, is serious.
After taking in 23 dogs and cats from a hoarding case, the Garrard County Animal Shelter has declared a “code red” emergency, and is asking for help in the form of potential pet parents, volunteers, and desperately needed supplies.
“We have zero kennels open at this point. We are going to have to euthanize if we don’t make room ASAP,” the shelter posted to Facebook on December 2. “We are in desperate need of cat sponsors, small dog crates, small dog food, blankets & towels, Parvo scrub, bleach, Pine sol, cat food, and cat litter. If you can adopt, foster, or rescue, please help.”
Shelter staff are worried they may have to begin euthanizing animals as there is little room to care for the victims brought in from the hoarding situation. The shelter was already nearing capacity before the animals arrived, WKYT reports.
A little room was made for the rescued cats and dogs, on Sunday, Dec. 3, as the shelter was forced to open its doors for extra help. More than 10 animals were adopted during the shelter’s “code red” event, and while the new residents have not been cleared for adoption just yet, director Brittany Fain told WKYT that she hopes the demand for pets around the holiday season will help connect these animals to caring and compassionate forever homes.
“We still have dogs and cats that are available here right now that want homes for Christmas,” Fain said. “That’s our Christmas wish, is to empty this shelter.”
It’s fortunate that the animals were rescued from the hoarding situation in Lancaster. Still, there’s no denying the scary situation that millions of shelter animals face every day.
