Making the decision to put a dog down is heartbreaking. Sometimes their medical bills are too expensive, sometimes they wouldn’t be able to live comfortably or happily due to medical conditions or injury. Other times, their behavior isn’t safe or there isn’t a place for them and no one to advocate for them. In these cases, veterinary staff or shelter workers often have to make the difficult decision.
No matter the reason, euthanizing an animal is a challenging but often necessary decision. Of course, for those who go through putting a dog down, they want their dogs to be as comfortable and happy as possible in their last days.
It’s not just owners who care about the animals’ last moments, but veterinarian staff as well.
An animal hospital in Alabama recently went viral for sharing a sweet thing they do for dogs moments before they’re put down.

The Smiths Station Animal Hospital uploaded a photo to Facebook of a jar of Hersey Kiss chocolates. On the jar read, “goodbye kisses.” They captioned the photo, “This jar is reserved for our euthanasia appointments…because no dog should go to Heaven without tasting chocolate.”
According to KPTV, the post was written by Dr. Nicole Namie, one of three veterinarians at the hosptial.
The photo was shared widely, and many people liked and commented on the post, sharing how they treated their pets for their final days.
One person commented, “It was truffled eggs and an early 15th birthday pupcake for our Bonnie (west highland terrier) on her last day. Followed by her favourite, smoked salmon just before our vet arrived.”
“We said goodbye to my best friend a year and a half ago. Sent him off eating cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets,” another wrote.
Another commented, “My baby ate chocolate ice cream with banana and whipped cream on her last night. Banana was her favorite thing, she couldn’t go without it.”
If you’re familiar with dogs, you probably know that chocolate is not a safe food for them. According to VCA Hospitals, “Yes, chocolate is toxic to dogs. While rarely fatal, chocolate ingestion can result in significant illness.”
They went on to explain that chocolate is toxic to dogs because it contains the chemicals theobromine and caffeine, which dogs can’t metabolize the same as humans do. The darker the chocolate, the worse it is for dogs.
Since dogs can’t have chocolate during their lives, the animal hospital found it fitting to offer them a piece of the sweet treat before they cross the rainbow bridge.
