Wang Yan entered the Chinese steel industry 14 years ago when it started to boom, which has made him very wealthy over the years. Now, he has almost nothing left, but he has spent it on an extremely great cause.
When his dog went missing in 2012, he searched everywhere but to no avail. Then, someone let him into the slaughterhouse to see if his pup was there. He kept looking for a week straight but never saw his dog. Instead, he witnessed horrific, gory scenes of dogs being butchered for meat.
This was a scene that he still hasn’t been able to get out of his head, and he knew he had to do something to help these poor dogs. So, he bought an abandoned steel factory in Changchun city in north-east China, and turned it into a shelter for strays.
Right now there are around 200 dogs at the rescue center, but at one point he had more than 1000 under his care. Most have since then found loving furever homes.
What Yan is doing is an amazing step toward putting an end to the dog meat industry. China is notorious for butchering dogs for meat. As many as 10,000 dogs are slaughtered there each year in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Sadly, they even hold a Yulin Dog Meat Festival to mark the summer solstice.
Yan enjoys spending time with the dogs, and from the looks of it, the dogs love spending time with him as well. The dogs he saves are extremely affectionate toward Yan, and I’m sure are very thankful that he saved their lives.
