“There’s something about cheese hitting things that I’ve always thought was funny,” says 22-year-old Windsorite Matthew Elias.
The internet seems to agree, though Elias’ dog hasn’t said much about it.
A Nov. 10 video of Elias’ fun with fromage has started another viral trend: the cheese challenge. Rather than surviving a bucket of ice water, inhaling cinnamon, or speaking with a mouthful of marshmallows, this challenge requires much less investment on the part of its participants.
All it takes to play:
- Grab some cheese
- Find a dog
- Throw a slice of cheese on the dog
And that’s it! Admittedly, Elias didn’t put much thought into the game’s rules. But that would take all the fun out of it.
As it’s currently played, the cheese challenge is fun for both pets and people. Pets get the cheese, and people get to watch a new hilarious trend play out ad nauseum online.
“(Expletive) beer pong, we playin dog cheese,” Elias says before lobbing a flimsy slice of Cheddar on his pet Shih Tzu Charlie.
According to the High River Times, the cheese challenge isn’t restricted to dog owners. One participant threw cheese on a pet lizard, another tossed a tortilla on their pet cat.
So far, Elias original video has been seen more than 2.1 million times on Twitter, and retweeted close to 30,000. But it all begs the question, why?
“Honestly, I don’t really have a good answer for that,” Elias wrote. “I didn’t even mean to actually land it on my dog. I meant to land the cheese next to him.”
An animal lover at heart, Elias has fended off claims of his cheesy new challenge amounting to some form of animal abuse. He says it’s all in fun.
“If you are going to do this, make sure your dog isn’t lactose intolerant, because then you could cause some problems,” he writes. “But as long as it’s harmless to the animal, I think it’s just funny.”
Most of the internet seems to agree, though not even Elias understands why.
“I’ve always kind of had an understanding that the internet is a crazy place,” Elias said. “One thing can start from nothing, and then end up being something completely different.”
