Thousands of homeless dogs roam the streets of Bosnia, with no food and no one to love them. It’s up to them to fend for themselves and survive. In Bosnia, animals are not treated the way they should be, and aren’t even entitled to the right to live.
Daisy, along with her puppies, is one of those dogs who has suffered through a miserable life on the Bosnian streets. But one day she ended up in a neighborhood near the home of a woman who saw the desperate plea for help in her eyes.
Dijana, who has been feeding stray dogs her entire life, spotted Daisy and her pups, and knew that she had to do something to help them. It’s unknown where the dogs came from, how long they’ve been on the streets, or even how old they were, but what she did know is that those dogs needed to be saved.
Dijana knew if she left the dogs on the street, that they may not be there the next morning, as dog catchers were patrolling nearby. If dog catchers got ahold of them, they would most likely be killed.
Although she couldn’t keep them at her house due to lack of room, she let them stay in her car while she worked with friends to make them an improvised shelter across the street in an abandoned yard, so that she could feed them and keep an eye on them in the meantime.
But things got harder from there. The puppies were growing quickly, and as they grew, so did their curiosity. All they wanted to do was search the streets for some human interaction, but Dijana knew how dangerous that would be for them. They became a target of evil people who were threatening to poison them or to report them to the dog catcher. People would also throw stones and other objects at them.
It didn’t take Daisy long to realize how mean the people in the neighborhood were to her and her puppies. She was a very good mom and did her best to keep her puppies safe in their shelter.
But the shelter was still not a proper place for them to live. The winter was rough and many days were -4 degrees Fahrenheit. Dijana went to check on them every two hours to bring them blankets, warm food, and water, since everything kept freezing within minutes.
