Days After Boarding Flight To Freedom, Abandoned Puppies Find Forever Homes

Cadbury, Peeps, and Goldbrick are three loving, adorable puppies from Louisiana. But that didn’t stop someone from leaving the puppies to die inside a hot tin shed in Louisiana.

Fortunately, the single mother living next door heard noises coming from the empty shed and went out to investigate. When the neighbor opened the door, she found the abandoned puppies inside a large basket.

“She opened the shed and found three small puppies in a large basket,” shelter workers told Greater Good Charities. The puppies were hot, panting, and probably terrified as temperatures climbed.

The woman and her son took care of the puppies for a while, but she knew she couldn’t keep them forever. These “basket babes,” as they later came to be known, were certainly loved, but failing health and financial challenges prevented the woman from giving them a good home.

“With tears in her eyes and her young son at her side, she surrendered them to the Iberville Parish Animal shelter,” shelter workers said. “We assured her that our goal was that the next basket these pups would be in was an Easter basket with their new loving family.”

Cadbury, Goldbrick, and Peeps were quickly booked on our Easter Flight to Freedom, which flew 100+ shelter pets from Louisiana to Michigan on April 19, 2022.

Operated by Greater Good Charities’ Good Flights with support from The Animal Rescue Site, Flights to Freedom save lives by flying shelter pets from Louisiana–where shelter overcrowding leaves them at risk of euthanasia–to U.S. regions where they’ll be quickly adopted.

Of course, these happy endings wouldn’t be possible without support from Animal Rescue Site readers, whose generous donations provided the means to fly the “basket babes” to safety and adoption.

This heartwarming story illustrates why we operate Flights to Freedom, which save lives and give at-risk animals the chance to get adopted. Thanks for helping us give Cadbury, Goldbrick, and Peeps a second chance at life!
