When Midnight, a generally well-behaved black lab mix living in Minnesota, suddenly started acting strangely, her owner immediately knew something was wrong.
The four-year-old dog “had her ears perked up looking at me,” said Tim Curman, recalling the dog’s unusually alert antics as he was taking out the trash. “She doesn’t normally do that. Sometimes you get that feeling something’s up,” Curfman told WCCO.
Lo and behold, when Curman followed the dog outside, they inadvertently ended up rescuing an elderly neighbor. The 87-year-old woman was trying to fill her birdfeeder on this frigid sub-zero day, but had lost her balance and tumbled into the snow.
“We figured she was out there at least a half an hour,” Curfman recalled to the station. “She could not have gotten up because her gloves had gotten wet and she didn’t have enough strength in her fingers to push herself up. Nothing around the corner to get up and get a hold of either.”

Midnight immediately rushed over to Noreen, who was stuck to the freezing ground. Fortunately, the elderly woman hadn’t broken any bones or suffered from frostbite. She hadn’t been able to get up, however, and if not for Curfman and Midnight’s intervention, she probably would have been there all night.
Noreen didn’t wish to appear on camera, but she was very clear that Midnight had saved her life, even comparing the helpful pooch to the famous companion animal of all, Lassie.
“We’ve been very proud of her because it’s not every dog that pays attention to things like this,” said Curfman. “And she got so many treats it was a shame.”
