Many people look to their dogs as a protector, and having them at home to bark is a great comfort to everyone, regardless of where you live. Thankfully, most dogs are never put to the test, but for Maya Fairweather, having 5-month-old Apollo with her literally saved her life.
Fairweather took her boyfriend’s puppy Apollo out for a walk at Brooklyn’s Red Hook Recreation Area park one Monday evening. After letting him off his leash in a free run area, Maya put on her headphones to relax while Apollo worked off some energy. Before long she felt someone behind her pull on her headphones.
“I felt someone pull my headphones,” she told the New York Post. “I thought it was my boyfriend grabbing me, so I turned around and smiled — but it wasn’t my boyfriend.”
Her attacker forced her to the ground and tried to tear her pants off.
I fell down on my hands,” Fairweather said. “I just closed my eyes because they say that if you see their face, they will kill you. I froze. I was really scared.”
Thankfully, Apollo realized what was happening and ran to her rescue. He bit the attacker on the leg, hard enough the man was unable to free himself of the bite.
“I heard him say, ‘F–k!’ and I was able to run away. I ran across the street,” Fairweather said
After the incident, when asked about her attacker, all Fairweather had to say was “I just hope he bit the s–t out of you.”
Apollo is an absolute hero at just 5-months old. It’s impossible to know what could have happened to Maya if Apollo hadn’t been there, but there is no doubt that he proved his love for his family, and they know how much they mean to him.
