“Aggressive” Wolf Dog Rescued From Entertainment Mellows When He Meets His New Owner

Most of us would probably not want to get up close and personal with a wild wolf. Although they are beautiful creatures and amazing to watch, we typically like to watch them from a distance.

There are those, however, who make it their life’s work to care for these wild animals when necessary. When treated properly with a kind hand and the right know-how, they can be amazing companions.

One person who understands how to care for these wild animals is Kimberly DeFisher. According to GeoBeats Animals, she has been surrounded by wild animals and has cared for them for most of her life.

This included dedicating much of her time and knowledge to rescuing those animals and teaching other people how to care for them.

One other thing to consider is the fact that she can care for the wild animals legally. She is a wildlife rehabilitator, licensed by the state.

In other words, she can save, raise, and rehabilitate animals that have been abused or injured and eventually release them into the wild.

In 2020, Kim started Arctic Fox Daily Wildlife Rescue Inc. She has always had the drive to help those animals get a second chance and she wanted to focus on rescuing Arctic foxes, along with other foxes.

One day, her dream of a lifetime came true when the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation called her. They needed assistance rehabilitating and rescuing a wolf dog.

Some unscrupulous individuals were hoarding several of these animals, keeping them as exotic animals and charging people to come to see them perform. The animals were confiscated, but they weren’t ready to be reintroduced to the wild.

The wolf-dog, named Dakota, was offered to Kimberly because she understood how to raise both foxes and wolves. Even still, she didn’t have experience with wolf dogs, but she decided to take a chance.

Dakota was not an easy animal to raise. He had an angry streak and was quite large, so caution needed to be exercised.

After coming out of his enclosure and getting his first taste of freedom, however, he had a change of personality. Suddenly, Dakota was not the aggressive wolf dog she anticipated, he was a sweet companion.

It wasn’t long before Dakota was hanging out with the other foxes and wolves she was caring for at the time. She could tell by his body language that he loved his new environment.

Suddenly, the temporary arrangement was turning into something more permanent. Dakota was always by Kim’s side, showing her affection and being protective.

Many people misunderstand wolf dogs, perhaps not truly understanding their nature. They can be aggressive, but that is rare.

In her words, they would rather flight than fight. A wolf would not want to conflict with you unless it was absolutely necessary.

Dakota was the first wolf-dog that Kim was able to raise. Since that time, she has added a few more to her pack.
