27 Golden Retriever Dogs & Puppies Rescued from Deplorable Conditions at Rhode Island Home

Twenty golden retriever puppies and seven adult dogs are receiving medical care at the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Rhode Island SPCA) after being rescued from “horrendous” conditions at a Hopkinton home.

Hopkinton Police Department shared on Facebook that on March 8 they were joined by Hopkinton Animal Control, Rhode Island SPCA, and an environmental scientist to, “to investigate the unlicensed breeding of puppies as well as conditions detrimental to the health of the dogs.”

Officials removed all the dogs and brought them back to Rhode Island SPCA to be examined and treated. The owner surrendered the dogs and will reportedly not face charges.

One shelter supporter, Gypsy Lavin, commented, “Unfortunately often times that is the negotiating factor to get them to surrender. It is costly to go to get court order and time consuming. During the time it could take the breeder could leave state, do harm to the animals or ship the animals to some place. A lot could happen in that time so in the best interest of the animals that is how they get the people to hand them over immediately. The animals safety comes first. Those people may be watched to ensure they don’t restart.”

The focus now is on the dogs and their health. Rhode Island SPCA appreciates all the interest in the rescued dogs but shared that they still have several weeks of medical care before they will be available for adoption.

They wrote, “Important pupdate! The golden retriever pups and dogs recently surrendered to us have tested positive for ringworm. This means that they are NOT available for foster or adoption for several weeks. We really appreciate your interest in these pups. Once we post these dogs on our website, we will then consider adoption applications. If you are still interested once posted, we encourage you to reapply then. We are currently giving the dogs the medical care they need and cannot consider applications at this time. We thank you for your patience and understanding.”
