Century old stories from around the world depict cats as goddesses and demons. So, what do you believe?

With all the hype behind cat superstitions we decided to compile a list of the 13 best ones. Connecticut College psychologist Stuart Vyse tells CBS News that most people are superstitious. Superstitious or not these ideas are sure to pique your curiosity.

13. If a black cat crosses your path, you will have bad luck (American)

Some people believe that the way a cat crosses your path from the right to left vs. left to right, will determine if you will be lucky or unlucky.

12. When a cat washes its ears a lot, it will rain (England)

No need to watch the weather, just keep an eye on where Fluffy is licking.

11. One white hair on a black cat is good luck.

So, tuxedo cats are very lucky!

10. Cats have nine lives (American)

This is thought to be true because cats are very curious and get themselves into all sorts of dangerous situations. Cats are also very agile and resistant, so they are able to overcome the impossible.

9. If a cat sneezes three times, someone will catch a cold

Bless you. Bless you. Bless you. However, Italians believe if a cat sneezes once it will bring luck.

8. If you dream of a white cat or own one, they will bring you luck (American)

Color plays a role in how different countries view the luck of cats. China thinks ugly cats are lucky, while Calico cats are lucky in Canada.

People in the Netherlands will not share secrets if there is a cat in the room, for fear the cat will spread the news.

Black cats are lucky in Japan and can protect against evil.

5. When moving into a new home always let the cat enter first for good luck (Russia)

Russians believe the cat should be the first one to enter a new home to bring good luck. Cats love being number one, so this should be easy to do.

4. A cat onboard a ship will bring good luck

Japanese sailors often bring a tricolored cat on the ship for luck. However, some people believe that if a black cat walks on the ship and then off, the ship will sink on its next voyage.
